Upright bikes are the most popular type of exercise bikes because they’re quite compact and are geared towards fitness rather than training for a race or for advanced fitness enthusiasts. While they’re not as easy on the back as recumbent bikes, you do sit upright, unlike when on spin bikes. They’re light, so very few allow you to stand while pedaling. So, what is the best upright exercise bike for the home? We’ll help you choose depending on your budget and other needs.

For more about the benefits of upright and other exercise bikes and how to choose the right one for you, see our exhaustive guide on stationary bikes. If you’d like to have more workout variety without springing for a second type of machine, then consider a hybrid, like a 2-in-1 elliptical with exercise bike seat.

There are many upright bikes to browse through, but we hope that our upright exercise bike reviews below will help you narrow down your choices.

Best Upright Exercise Bike for the Money

Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright Bike with Pulse

Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright Bike with PulseThe top rated upright exercise bike under $200 is this very portable folding upright bike from Exerpeutic. This bike uses an eight level magnetic control system that allows you to adjust your workout to make it easier or harder, depending on your fitness goals. The bike also includes a hand pulse monitor that will allow you to track your heart rate while you’re exercising, and a large adjustable seat that accommodates users from 5’3” to 6’1” and up to 300 lbs.

It features a large LCD display for easy access to distance, calories burned, speed, time, and your heart rate. The biggest feature of this bicycle is its ability to fold up to half its size for storage, and with its wheels it can be easily moved throughout your house. Its lower price is another major selling point and you get a 1 year limited warranty.

However, the inability to change the installed seat out for a smaller saddle seat creates some headache, as longer rides get uncomfortable with this seat. You can’t select pre-programmed workouts but you shouldn’t expect that at this price. Despite this, the Exerpeutic Folding Magnetic Upright Bike is a very affordable beginner’s cycle for those who are looking to get fit.

Exerpeutic GOLD 500 XLS Foldable Upright Bike

Exerpeutic GOLD 500 XLS Foldable Upright BikeThe Exerpeutic 500XLS is one of the more durable and sturdy cycles on our list, as it accommodates users up to 400 lbs and users from 5’1” to 6’5”. This wide range is one of the biggest in our list, but a few short users say you shouldn’t get it if you’re shorter than 5’3″. The steel used in this piece of equipment is 20% more than the Exerpeutic Folding Upright Bike and there seems to be an improvement in seat comfort.

Just like the above model, the Exerpeutic 500 XLS uses an eight level magnetic control system, and with a large LCD display, you can easily track your calories burned, time, and calories burned as well as your heart rate with the heart pulse sensors. The bike also folds up for storage and can be easily moved throughout the house. Though this is one of the more accommodating bikes for a wide range of users, the seat sits a bit behind the pedals instead of right above and only the seat height can be adjusted, as has been noted by several users. Still, this bike is the best upright stationary bike for anyone wanting high quality construction at a reasonable price.

Marcy Upright Mag Bike ME 708

Marcy Upright Mag Bike ME 708The last bike on our list is one of the best budget bikes around, the Marcy Upright Mag Bike. Marcy Folding Upright Bike / Foldable Exercise Cycle NS-652

Marcy Folding Upright Bike NS-652As long as you’re not too many inches away from average height or too heavy, this Marcy NS-652 upright can be had for just over $100! It’s made for small spaces, as it can be folded into quite a small piece of equipment. It’s weight capacity goes up to 250 lbs.

This folding upright exercise bike is fairly similar as the model above in what it offers – 8 resistance levels, an LCD screen showing basic fitness stats, an adjustable seat and adjustable foot straps on the pedals. However, the comfortable user height here is even smaller than on the Marcy ME 708 due to the folding design.

The only drawback with this bike is its lack of a heart rate monitor, but at such a low price, that’s hardly a surprise.
